Popularly known as the “Manchester of South India”, Coimbatore is home to more than 25000 textile and manufacturing industries. In order to help the textile mills boost their production capabilities, Veejay Lakshmi Engineering Works Limited (www.veejaylakshmi.com) came into existence in 1974. They were originally a company owned by a few individuals, but in 1994 the company went public on the Mumbai Stock Exchange. The public could own a part of the company by buying individual shares worth Rs. 75 that year. The company started manufacturing the two-for-one twister machine for the first time in 1975.

Veejay Lakshmi takes pride in being the sole manufacturer of the automatic cone winding machine in India. The partnership with the Italian manufacturer Savio Machine Tessili in 1996 helped them develop the first automatic cone winding machine for the Indian market. Since 2004, they have been making their own machines.

Veejay Lakshmi’s engineering division manufactures Two-For-One Twisters, Excello Automatic Cone Winder, Random Assembly Winder & Rewinder, and Precision Propeller Winder. The textile division makes cotton yarns with the help of winders. The electricity division consists of windmills producing 4.05 MW and solar power systems capable of producing 1 MW. Veejay Sales and Services Ltd handles the supply, installation, and maintenance of all products.

The company has a diverse customer base, with no customers contributing to 10% of the company’s revenue. Their top customers include Lei Kong Corporation, Y Kwang Thread Guatemala, and Concorde Textiles. They get their raw materials from Rajeshwari Steels Private Limited, Mohan Industry, and Spring Steel India. The company has sold more than 6000 two for-one twisters in India. They also export their machinery to Far-Eastern countries such as China, Thailand, Indonesia, and the Philippines. Veejay Lakshmi exports cotton yarn produced in their textile division to Egypt, Belgium, Italy, Hongkong, Singapore, and Korea.

Although they are active in the textile industry, it is a misnomer to characterize them as a textile brand. Veejay Lakshmi specializes in providing engineering solutions to all companies and individuals. Their services cover the areas of product die design, die manufacturing, pressure casting, machining, and assembly.
