What does ‘Organic’ mean to you?

Fresh and natural. Right?

That’s exactly what Mr Jnana Saravanan targets through Deesan Farms (@DeesanFarms). Spread over 36 acres of farmland in Meenakshipuram, Palakkad district, Kerala, Deesan Farms is the epitome of meticulously systematic organic farming. It integrates vegetable farming, coconut grove, dairy farming, and whatnot. The major highlight is the fact that the entire setup is driven the natural way, right till the pesticides that are used to protect the crops.

Having quit a high-paying IT job, Saravanan, all of 35, is that successful young farmer who decided to venture into his family agricultural business after an 8-year-long stint in the corporate world. Deesan Farms took shape in 2016 and has grown tremendously since then.

Deesan Farms is a venture by Mr Jnana Saravanan, who quit a job in the IT sector and took to farming. For the past six years, it has grown tremendously from a simple agricultural unit to a systematically planned organic unit, integrating vegetable farming, dairy farming, coconut groves and whatnot. Deesan Farms adopts natural farming methodologies and sustainable farming practices.

With trees from the coconut grove on one side yielding tons of coconuts (also used for making wood-pressed coconut oil), the remaining land flourishes with plantains, vegetables like brinjals, chillies, etc., and fruits like guava. In addition to crop cultivation, Deesan Farms has a dairy farm that houses indigenous breeds of cows from Tamil Nadu, Punjab, Maharashtra, and Gujarat. His dairy farm supplies milk to the nearby milk society daily. It is also into the production of milk products like butter and ghee.

What Saravanan has established cannot be categorised as an agricultural unit. It is only right to call it a very well-planned and systematic organic unit driven by the idea of self-sustainability. While the waste from the dairy farm becomes fertilizers through composting, even the water used to clean the cowsheds gets collected in a tank and used for irrigation. Deesan Farms also has a vast vermicomposting unit and an automated fertigation unit, thereby adopting natural farming methodologies and sustainable farming practices.

Saravanan has been a great inspiration to many youngsters and farmers across the country who flock to his farm to study his practices. Deesan Farms has indeed been true to its primary aim of providing for a healthy society.
